Future Of Westport - 5/7/2008

Press Release: The Town of Westport has initiated a series of public meetings to define a “Future of Westport.” The first meeting will be an opportunity for members of the community to identify where the Town is strong, and vulnerable – leading to a vision for the future and specific actions that can be addressed by both public and private sector interests. The first meeting will conduct a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) to determine the “big picture” of the most important factors that influence quality of life and prosperity of the Town of Westport. A SWOT analysis is a way for the community to discover what is doing well, what can be improved, what opportunities, or changes, in the outside world need to be addressed. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for community members to identify specific ideas that can be acted upon. These actions will be evaluated by the group, and categorized for further study in follow-up meetings. Ultimately, the process will identify a “Plan of Action,” a strategic document that prioritizes the actions to address the Town’s SWOT's. The first meeting is scheduled for May 22 at 6:30 at the Westport Central School. For members of the community that cannot attend the meeting, please submit your thoughts on-line. Remember that strengths and weaknesses are internal to the Town (great waterfront), while opportunities and threats are external – things that the Town has little control of (price of oil). Then provide ideas that you think can address the SWOT – and be creative, this is not the time to restrict your thinking!
